A "collectible" is typically a manufactured item rather than a natural item such as "butterflies" or "rocks". Some objects designed for other purposes, such as toys or stamps, become so popular among collectors that they are later marketed specifically to that audience. Discovered in 1676, Lead Crystal, (also called crystal), is lead glass that has been faceted with light reflecting cuts, either by hand or by machine. Lead crystal retains a much higher index of refraction than normal glass, because lead oxide has been added to it during the molten state. This gives it a much better "sparkle". The most sparkling crystal may consist of up to 35% lead. The higher lead content also makes it much more difficult to form the crystals during manufacturing, and consequently, makes them more expensive.

It is commonly held that Swarovski (Austrian) Crystals are the finest quality, lead crystals made today. These crystals are faceted with tremendous precision, creating beautiful prisms.
